cast swarm

A bee colony may swarm several times. The first swarm is known as the ‘prime’ swarm. All that follows are known as cast swarms and the hive is known, by beekeepers, to have ‘thrown off a cast’. Casts will be smaller than a prime swarm, sometimes tiny, and will often contain a virgin queen.
